Why Betsy?

Why choose me as a therapist for you?

I have been practicing for over 30 years in the Chapel Hill area and I have a solid knowledge base about community resources, educational settings, health care and hospitals, support groups, etc. I have a long history of working with many different health care practitioners in this area and am happy to confer with yours if that is appropriate and helpful. I truly enjoy giving my clients the tools and insight to reflect on and work through life challenges. I’ve designed my practice so that it is safe, warm, nurturing and empowering for you.

Why choose me as a therapist for your child?

Several years ago, while visiting one of our own children’s pediatricians, I was trying to describe a bedtime issue we were experiencing. I realized that it was difficult to describe it in detail and finally stated, “Oh, doctor...I wish you could be a fly on the wall and come over and see for yourself what I’m trying to describe to you.” That moment totally changed the way that I decided to offer services to families. I realized that health care professionals typically get a “snapshot” view of their patients in a sterile, medical or formal setting. Observing children in their natural settings (a classroom, at recess, on the soccer field, at the dinner table) allows me to see the issues myself and help understand the root of the behavior.

I have observed bedtime routines in client’s homes, coached parents on where/how to use time-out, visited post-partum mothers in their homes, and accompanied anxious children to dental and pediatric appointments. I have had the pleasure of working with children where their fear or anxiety is occurring, whether this is riding elevators, walking past a cemetery or seeing a spider in the woods. This flexibility has been a wonderful adjunct tool for my therapy practice.

Having a master’s degree in play therapy has given me a foundation for incorporating games, projects, sensory activities and much more as an adjunct to traditional therapy. Pediatric clients enjoy having their own custom “notebooks” and “tool kits” that we work on together to assist in their therapy. It’s a joy to watch them blossom with new “tools” that they’ve learned to rely on and that help empower them to handle past obstacles.

My goal is to make all of my clients feel safe, nurtured, empowered and better able to handle whatever challenges life throws their way.
